Summer is near and car dealerships will soon offer incentives for purchasing 2013 vehicle models in order to make room for 2014 models. If you are in the market for a new sedan and fuel efficiency is important to you, we have identified the most fuel-efficient 2013 models.

Hybrid vehicles are really a separate category, we have excluded them from our list and only included gasoline powered sedans. Below is data on the 8 most fuel-efficient regular gasoline sedans for 2013, with fuel efficiency ratings directly from the EPA fuel economy rankings. The list includes economy cars, mid-ranged priced cars, and luxury brand cars, so there are choices for all budgets and preferences. All sedans listed have an automatic transmission to achieve EPA-rated fuel economy figures, unless noted.

2013 hyundai elantra

2013 Hyundai Elantra

The most fuel-efficient 2013 sedan in America is the Hyundai Elantra, which also has the lowest base price of cars on our list by about $5000. Both manual (standard) and automatic transmission (optional) Elantra GLS and Limited models share the same excellent fuel economy ratings. Either front-wheel Elantra model comes with a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower, while the more environmentally friendly ULEV/PZEV model comes with a 145 horsepower engine.

Standard safety features include a vehicle stability management system, daytime running lights, traction control, rear child-seat attachment system, tire pressure monitoring system, anti-lock braking system, six airbags, and brake assist.

The 2013 Altima offers four fuel-efficient models that have a 4-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower: 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, and 2.5 SL. All are front-wheel drive and utilize a continuously variable automatic transmission.

2013 Honda Accord

EPA ranks the Honda Accord as the third most fuel efficient gasoline sedan among 2013 vehicles. Three Accord automatic transmission models share the fuel economy specs listed below: the LX, EX, and EX-L (only the EX-L comes standard with an automatic transmission). All three have a 4-cylinder motor with 185 horsepower.

Standard safety features for all three models include six airbags, child-proof rear door locks, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, seat-belt reminder, stability assist with traction control, security system, anti-lock breaking system, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, tire pressure monitoring system, and daytime running lights.

The Toyota Camry offers a total of four models rated highly by the EPA for fuel economy: L, LE, SE, XLE. These front-wheel drive Camrys have a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter engine with 178 horsepower and all come standard with an automatic transmission.

BMW’s 2013 320i is the third car on our list to get a combined 28 MPG. The rear-wheel 320i has a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower (manual transmission gets a combined MPG of 27).
