Ethanol, the “clean air” additive, brought to you by coal power plants?

by lars on March 29, 2006

A Wired News blog post mentions that ethanol plants in the Midwest are shifting toward coal powered production, because it is a cheaper way to produce ethanol.

Makes perfect sense! Let’s burn more coal so that we can can then send around giant tankers filled with ethanol that will clean the air back again.

The blog post doesn’t mention any hard numbers, but you really have to wonder if ethanol is just another code word for corn subsidies.
