Ian Swingland is a British scientist who has worked on innovative ways to protect the forests of Malaysia, which suffer increasing problems with deforestation. The basic idea is to trade “carbon credits,” which turns the protection of a forest into a kind of business.
“Conventional conservation is a disaster story,” he states. “What isn’t a disaster is where you make a business of it, and everybody’s lives are improved by it, and we give them ownership of their own future.”
His company is Sustainable Forestry Management Ltd. and carbon credits are basically promises by manufacturing plants and power stations that they will emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They then can begin to sell their credits as stock on the market. This money can then be invested in the protection of forests.
I don’t play the stock market, so if anyone can help me figure out what exactly this means, that’d be great.
