Insulate Your Hot Water Heater for Extra Energy Savings!

by kswanson56 on September 12, 2006

Now that fall is just around the corner, it’s a good idea to start thinking of ways you can stop leaks of energy in your home. An easy and cost effective way to do this is by insulating your hot water heater and your hot water pipes. Heck, even the U.S. government recommends that you insulate your water heater!

Unless your water heater’s storage tank already has a high R-value of insulation (at least R-24), adding insulation to it can reduce standby heat losses by 25%–45%. This will save you around 4%–9% in water heating costs.

For an interesting article about someone’s real life experience updating their water heater, check out the Groovy Green blog. They have lots of great photos on what the process looks like. The author writes: “…how I turned my hot water tank into a big (energy efficient) marshmallow.” Yeah, it looks a little weird but no one ever said that energy efficiency was pretty!
